Introduction to Developmental Disabilities (2.5 hours)
Participants will explore characteristics of different developmental disabilities including intellectual disability, autism, cerebral palsy, and epilepsy.
Teaching Strategies and Challenges (1.5 hours)
This course reviews learning styles and effective teaching strategies for different developmental disabilities.
Basic Health & Safety: Seizures (1.0 hour)
Participants will learn causes and risk factors for epilepsy, different types of seizures, and treatment available.
Basic Health & Safety: Health Observations and Measurements (2.0 hour)
This course instructs participants in basic health observations, symptoms of acute and chronic medical conditions, and reporting and documentation blues.
Infectious Disease in the Workplace (2.5 hours)
Participants will learn about transmission symptoms and treatment of infectious diseases at work (HIV, Hepatitis B, and TB) as well as Universal Precautions.
Classroom Courses
Being a DSP (1.5 hours)
This course Reviews qualifications and responsibilities of the DSP. Participants will also learn to access Anixter Center’s online DSP courses.
Abuse & Neglect (3.0 hours)
Participants will learn types of abuse and neglect, reporting responsibilities, investigation procedures, and preventive strategies.
Human Rights (3.5 hours)
This course covers the historical struggle for human rights for people with disabilities, roles of Human Rights and Behavior Support Committees, guardians, confidentiality, and the DSP’s role in supporting choices and protecting rights.
Human Interaction & Communication (4.0 hours)
Participants will lean modes of communication, barriers to and strategies for improving communication, and assistive technology.
Service Plans and Documentation (4.0 hours)
This course covers person-centered planning and implementation of Service Plans, development of goals and objectives and documentation practices.
Basic Health & Safety
ADL’s: (1 hour) covers personal care and hygiene practices and how to support individuals with ADLs.
Nutrition, Eating, and Food Safety: (2 hours) addresses healthy eating, feeding procedures and food safety, and obesity risk factors.
Medications: (2 hours) covers types of medications commonly used by people with disabilities, side effects, interactions, and staff responsibilities.
Individual and Environmental Safety: (1.5 hours) covers safety procedures and support strategies for ensuring the safety of people with developmental disabilities.
Sexuality: (1 hour) addresses ways to support individuals’ sexuality and reviews sexual abuse symptoms and reporting responsibilities.
Ethics/HIPAA (1 hour)
This course covers ethical responsibilities of DSPs as well as confidentiality laws and practices.
Participants will earn .1 IACET CEU credit for every 1.0 hour of instruction completed online and/or in the classroom. The fee for the 34 hours of instruction is $850. All of the classes are located at:
